Viennese Modernism

This literature database enables research in the subject area »Science, Politics and the Public in the "Viennese Modern Age"«

For many areas of Austrian art, cultural and intellectual history, "Viennese Modernism" (around 1880-1930) is considered the time of the breakthrough of avant-garde modernism in Central Europe as well. Accordingly, scientific research focused primarily on progressive endeavors in the fields of philosophy, literature, music, architecture and the fine arts.

In contrast, little attention has been paid to a significant moment in "Viennese Modernism": the popularization and democratization of (natural) scientific knowledge. The Viennese popular education movement played a significant role in the social dissemination of modern, scientific thought and action.
