06.09.2018 - 09.09.2018
|
Friche La Belle de Mai, 41 Rue Jobin, 13003 Marseille (Frankreich)

Our conference will provide an international platform for the development of strategies on how citizenship education and civil society can counter the negative trend in liberal democracy and defend the civic space and basic democratic rights and freedoms in our societies. Initiatives from Marseille and other regions of France will inform about the political and social challenges of citizenship education in their country. Scholars, practitioners and activists from all over Europe and its eastern and southern neighbors will meet to discuss the value of citizenship education as an indispensable subject for democracies in the 21st century.

Confirmed speakers include Niccolò Milanese, Jan-Werner Müller, Vincent Hendricks, Basil Kerski, Claire Demesmay, Edit Inotai, Istvan Hegedüs, Karolina Wigura, Alberto Alemanno and Fernando Vallespin. Emily O’Reilly, the European Ombudswoman, will speak about citizens’ rights and democracy in the European Union.

NECE is open for citizenship educators, activists and students from Europe and North Africa as well as for the public of Marseille, French educators and civil society organisations. Conference participation is free of charge. The conference venue Friche La Belle de Mai, a public space in the centre of Marseille, offers a framework for a "festival” of networking, dialogue and inspiration.
